Ostrava is the third largest city in the Czech Republic. The Moravian-Silesian metropolis, which has over three hundred thousand inhabitants, offers a wide range of sports, cultural and social experiences.
Permanent theater scenes such as the Moravian-Silesian National Theater, the Jiří Myron Theater and the Petr Bezruč Theater or a number of music clubs offer rich cultural background.
Ostrava is still, mainly, a city of sports. This is confirmed by the title of the European City of Sport from 2014. The world’s most prestigious contests are held repeatedly there. Since 1961 one of the the audience’s favorite is the Golden Spike athletic encounter, which has held many of the world records and which has been, for many years, repeatedly visited by stars such as Usain Bolt or Asafa Powell in recent years. A tennis holiday are the The Fed Cup and Davis Cup World Cups with the attendance of the best tennis players in the world.
The extraordinary event was the Ice Hockey World Championships in 2015, which had a massive attendance. The head of the IIHF International Hockey Federation René Fasel then gave Ostrava a tremendous compliment when he appreciated the organization, the atmosphere and the sold out stadium: “It is again confirmed that the Czech Republic is a hockey country. Even in Ostrava, where the Czechs are not playing, it’s still almost full.”
